FAQ
What is a crown?
The chimney crown is a slab of concrete that tops the masonry chimney. It's sole design is to prevent water from running into the chimney. It reaches from the liner and surpasses the chimney edge to allow water to divert from masonry and exit roof.
How do I know if my crown is damaged?
When your crown is cracked or damaged, you may experience unwanted water or moisture in or around your flue or liner. You may also experience grit and moisture in your fireplace or a moldy/musty smell in your home. Without a chimney crown, small uninvited animals can also take shelter in your chimney.
What is chimney flashing?
Chimney flashing is a type of roof flashing that creates a waterproof seal to protect your chimney and roof from water damage and penetration. Chimney flashing is typically installed by a roofer as he/she is installing or replacing your roof. Flashing first goes under the shingles and a counter flashing is often installed after the roof install is complete.
How do I know if my flashing is damaged?
The wear and tear from weather and condensation on the metal flashing and leaking bricks can all cause chimney leaks when it rains. In a lot of cases, you can actually repair the flashing rather than replace it altogether. However, significant damage could require a complete replacement. If your flashing is worn or damaged, you may see water marks or mold on your ceiling/roof around your chimney.
What is the point in cleaning and waterproofing my chimney?
Over time moss, ivy and other natural growths can cling to your chimney. When this happens, moss can severely damage or even eat through your mortar joints between your brick or stone and cause it to eventually fall out. This can create holes in your chimney or even structurally unstable masonry. Waterproofing your masonry can prevent the inevitable wear and tear of the elements on your masonry and mortar joints.
What is repointing?
Repointing is the process of repairing or refilling mortar joints in brick. Mortar joints play a critical role in the structural integrity of a brick wall or chimney.
How do I know if I need a repoint?
If you have missing mortar between the bricks in the masonry of your chimney, you may experience water or mold inside of your chimney or fireplace. You may also experience grit in your fireplace from old mortar fallout. Mortar can turn completely to sand over time!
